The most-used and most-misused trade tool

Angle grinders cut steel, slice paving slabs, grind welds flush, and clean up rebar — few site tools earn their keep faster. They are also responsible for more A&E visits than any other power tool. The right grinder, with the right disc, used at the right angle, transforms a job. The wrong combination kicks back, snaps the disc, and embeds shrapnel in the user's face.

This guide covers the best angle grinders for UK trade use in 2026, focused on 115 mm and 125 mm cordless and corded models.

What to look for

Top picks: best angle grinders UK 2026

DeWalt DCG405N 18V XR Brushless 125mm Angle Grinder

~£125 (bare) / £240 (kit)

Best for: Cordless grinder on DeWalt XR

DeWalt's 125 mm 18V XR brushless grinder is the workhorse for most UK trades on the XR platform. Kickback brake, electric brake (stops the disc in 2 seconds when released), tool-free disc guard. Paddle switch for safety. About 80–120 metal cuts per 5Ah charge.

~£130 (bare) / £250 (kit)

Best for: LXT users / lightweight cordless

Makita's 115 mm 18V LXT brushless grinder is lighter than the DeWalt at 2.0 kg and runs longer per charge. AFT (Automatic Force Tool) detects sudden load changes and shuts off in milliseconds. Paddle switch standard. The right pick if you are on Makita's LXT platform.

Safety and buying advice

Always wear safety glasses (rated to EN 166 grade B impact) and a face shield when cutting metal. Cut-resistant gloves do not protect against angle grinder blades. The disc spins at ~10,000 RPM and will travel through skin, bone and muscle in milliseconds if it slips.

Never remove the disc guard. Never use a damaged disc — check for cracks before fitting and ring-test ceramic discs by tapping them lightly. Always cut on the underside of the disc (12 o'clock position), never the top, where kickback throws the tool back at you.

Frequently asked questions

What size angle grinder should I buy?

115 mm (4.5 inch) is the most common trade size — light, controllable, fits most disc types. Choose 125 mm (5 inch) if you need a slightly deeper cut. 230 mm is for floor cutting and large concrete only and is much harder to control.

Are paddle switches really safer?

Yes — paddle switches require active grip to stay on, so the grinder stops the instant you let go or drop it. Slider switches latch on, which means a dropped grinder keeps spinning — a serious injury risk. Avoid slider-only models for new purchases.

How important is a kickback brake?

Critical. A kickback brake detects sudden disc jams (the most common cause of grinder injuries) and shuts the motor off in milliseconds. Modern brushless trade grinders all include this — it is not worth saving money on a model without it.
