The situation

Every November the first proper cold snap catches a lot of UK homeowners out. Frozen pipes, boilers that have not been serviced since 2022, and draughty front doors that cost £30 a week in extra heating bills. By the time you notice, the plumbers are already booked out two weeks deep and the insulation aisle at B&Q is picked clean.

This kit is the pre-winter checklist in one Amazon basket — seven items that between them protect the plumbing, cut the draughts, keep the boiler honest and leave you with a working snow shovel when the gritters run out. Order it in October; by the time the clocks go back you are ready.

Why this kit matters

Frozen and burst pipes cost UK insurers around £500 million a year, and the single most common claim after a cold snap is an unoccupied or under-heated property where the pipes in the loft or an outbuilding have frozen, cracked and then thawed — dumping thousands of litres of water through the ceiling. Lagging a loft is a £15 job that prevents a £5,000 claim.

On top of that, UK heating bills have gone up roughly 45 percent in the last four years. Cutting draughts around doors, windows and the letterbox typically reduces heat loss by 10–20 percent, paying back the cost of the kit in a single winter. This is low-hanging fruit and you do not need a tradesperson to fit any of it.

The kit — every item you need

Self-Adhesive Insulating Tape (10m)

~£8–£14

Why it's in the kit: Seals the small draughts around window frames and door architraves that individually feel minor but collectively cost a fortune in heat loss.

Closed-cell foam weather strip with a peel-and-stick backing. Cut to length with scissors, press it into the gap between the window sash and the frame, and you have effectively double-glazed a single-glazed unit for a couple of pounds per window. Lasts three to five winters before it needs replacing.

Pipe Lagging Foam (22mm x 2m, Pack of 4)

~£10–£18

Why it's in the kit: Wraps the copper pipes in the loft and under the bath so they do not freeze and split during a cold snap.

Pre-slit grey foam tubes that snap straight onto any exposed copper pipe. Pay attention to the diameter — 22mm is standard UK hot/cold, 15mm for feed pipes. A 2m length handles an average pipe run in a loft. Add some PVC tape at the joints where the foam meets and the lagging is good for a decade.

Draught Excluder (Heavy Fabric, 90cm)

~£10–£18

Why it's in the kit: Blocks the gap under the front or back door where most of the cold air rolls in after dark.

A heavy-fabric sausage draught excluder sat against the base of the door eliminates the worst single draught in most UK homes. Pick 90cm for standard UK internal doors, or 100cm for external doors. Look for weighted fill rather than foam — it stays put when the door opens and closes.

Snow Shovel (D-Grip, 45cm Blade)

~£15–£28

Why it's in the kit: For the two or three mornings a year the driveway needs clearing before anyone can safely leave the house.

A D-grip plastic-bladed snow shovel with a steel-reinforced edge and a hardwood or tubular steel shaft. 45cm blade is the sweet spot — wider tires you out, narrower takes forever. Keep it in the garage all year; the moment snow is forecast they sell out at every hardware shop in Kent.

Rock Salt / Grit (25kg Bag)

~£10–£18

Why it's in the kit: For the driveway, path and front door step when the council gritter has not been down your road in three days.

A 25kg bag of brown rock salt does a typical front path and driveway three or four times over the course of a winter. Store it in a dry bucket with a lid — loose in the shed it absorbs moisture and sets into a solid block. Spread thinly and it starts working within minutes of contact with ice.

Boiler Service Kit (Magnetic Filter Cleaner + Corrosion Inhibitor)

~£30–£45

Why it's in the kit: For the DIY bits of a boiler service between professional visits — keeps the system clean and avoids sludge build-up.

Not a substitute for a Gas Safe annual service, but a twice-yearly top-up of corrosion inhibitor through the header tank and a clean of the magnetic filter keeps your central heating circulating properly. Sludge is the single biggest cause of cold radiators and pump failures, and both are avoidable for £30 of kit plus thirty minutes of your time.

Thermal Curtains (Blackout, 66 x 72 inch Pair)

~£25–£50

Why it's in the kit: Cut night-time heat loss through single or even double-glazed windows by up to 25 percent.

Thermal-lined curtains with a heavyweight triple-weave or coated backing are the easiest retrofit in the kit. Hang them wider than the window and long enough to touch the sill or floor. The thermal gap they create traps warm air and keeps the cold glass surface away from the room. Pay for quality — cheap ones are thin polyester and do nothing.

What this kit doesn't cover

A winter readiness kit handles the preventive side — draughts, pipe freezing and the worst of the ice. It does not replace an annual Gas Safe boiler service, a proper EPC-driven insulation upgrade, or roof/chimney work. If you have had a boiler breakdown, a frozen pipe burst, or noticed visible damp anywhere, call a professional rather than relying on the kit.

FAQs

When should I fit the pipe lagging and draught excluders?

Ideally by late October. The day a cold snap is forecast is the worst time — you will be doing it in gloves in a dark loft when the temperature is already dropping. An hour on a mild Saturday in autumn beats two hours at midnight trying to insulate a pipe that has already started ticking with cold.

Is rock salt safe for a concrete driveway?

Yes in small quantities for occasional winter use. Over many winters salt can cause some surface pitting on older concrete, particularly if the driveway was laid without proper air-entraining additives. If the driveway is under three years old or looks like it might be delicate, consider a commercial ice melt formulated for concrete instead — slightly more expensive but zero risk.

Can I service the boiler myself with this kit?

No — a proper annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer is still a legal and insurance requirement on most boilers. The kit in this bundle is for between-service maintenance only: keeping the magnetic filter clean and the inhibitor topped up. Both extend the life of the boiler and cut the chance of mid-winter breakdowns.

Are thermal curtains worth it on double glazing?

Yes — double glazing cuts heat loss by roughly 60 percent compared with single glazing, but the window is still by far the coldest surface in a room. Thermal curtains create an air gap and add another insulating layer, recovering another 10–25 percent of overnight heat loss. On single glazing they are transformative; on double glazing they are still worth the £40.
