Measuring & Detection / BUYING REFERENCE

Wall and stud detectors

Choose a detector by what it is designed to detect and the surfaces the manufacturer supports. A model that indicates metal and live cables may not offer the same timber-stud function as another scanner. The stated detection depth can also differ by material, so one headline depth should not be applied to every object. Use the exact model’s manual to understand limitations and calibration requirements. A detector result alone should not be treated as confirmation that a wall is safe to drill.

What to check before buying

  1. Check the explicitly supported targets: timber, ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal and live cables may differ.
  2. Compare stated detection depths separately for each material and the wall construction described by the manufacturer.
  3. Read calibration requirements and conditions that can affect readings before relying on a product’s advertised range.
  4. Confirm battery requirements, display and alert types, and the exact model or generation supplied.
