Tape measures

Choose enough tape length for the measurements you actually take, then consider how clearly you can read the scale. Metric-only and mixed metric/imperial tapes appear together in shopping results. Blade width, the hook arrangement and the way the tape locks also affect day-to-day handling. Stanley’s specifications distinguish blade length, blade width and standout, which are useful separate comparisons. An advertised reach figure should not be treated as the total length of the tape or a guarantee in every measuring position.

Choose a tape measure by the scale you can read comfortably, the length you need and the blade layout. Two 5 m tapes can have different widths and units. The exact product code is a better buying reference than a photograph of a yellow case or a broad FATMAX label.

Three UK tape variants compared

These Stanley UK examples separate blade length from blade width and scale. They are specification references, not a ranking or a claim that every tape in each range has the same markings. The 8 m model provides a longer blade; it does not automatically provide a more accurate measurement.

Metric-only or metric and imperial?

For projects specified in millimetres, check that the scale lets you identify individual millimetre marks clearly. A mixed scale can be useful for dimensions supplied in feet and inches, but keep the reading on the intended edge. Double-sided printing means markings on both faces of the blade; it is a separate feature from having two unit systems.

Write the unit beside each measurement. For example, 127 mm and 12.7 cm describe the same length. A note reading only 127 leaves the person ordering or cutting material to guess. The tape-reading guide explains the marks with worked metric and imperial examples.

Length, width and standout answer different questions

Total blade length limits how far the tape can extend. Width describes the strip itself. Standout and reach are additional manufacturer terms, so compare their stated definitions and conditions rather than treating any one number as the tape length.

Stanley's FMHT33105-5 page separately lists an 8 m blade, 3 m standout and 4.9 m reach. Keeping those labels attached to their figures avoids an apparent contradiction. A longer advertised reach also does not remove the need to keep the tape aligned with the dimension being measured.

Check the hook and the actual pack

Stanley explains that the movement of its end hook compensates for the hook's thickness when pulling against an outside edge or pushing against an inside face. Normal designed movement alone is therefore not evidence of a fault. Check for damage separately and follow the maker's instructions.

Before ordering, match the product code, scale and pack quantity. An accuracy-class label belongs to the exact tape and its stated conditions; it is not a promise that every reading or technique will achieve one fixed error tolerance.

MATCH THE DETAILS TO YOUR JOB

What to check before buying

  1. Match the exact product code, blade length and metric or imperial scale.
  2. Treat blade width, total length, standout and reach as separate specifications.
  3. Check scale visibility and one-sided or double-sided printing.
  4. Confirm the hook condition and stated accuracy class; read the selected pack quantity.
