Most popular trades in Kent

EV Charger Installers and gardeners lead the market by sheer count of unique businesses. The rise of low-carbon trades is also visible — EV charger installers and solar panel installers combined now account for 377 Kent businesses, reflecting how quickly Kent homeowners are switching to low-carbon installs.

Traders per town — the full Kent breakdown

Rochester leads the pack with 226 listings, but population matters. On a per-capita basis, smaller towns punch above their weight — a useful signal for homeowners in less-covered areas.

Populations are 2021-census approximations. Traders-per-10k is a crude density measure; towns with high commuter inflow may have inflated figures.

Trades-per-capita: where is Kent over- and under-served?

Ranking Kent towns by traders per 10,000 residents tells a different story to raw counts. Snodland sits on top with 157.5 traders per 10k residents — a figure inflated by the fact that small market towns share their trades with surrounding villages, but striking nonetheless. At the other end, large urban centres like Maidstone register the lowest density at 19.6 traders per 10k, although in absolute terms they still have one of the largest pools of trades in Kent.

Lower density does not mean fewer traders are available — only that the local pool is smaller relative to the resident population. Larger towns have far more absolute traders.

Plumbers-per-capita: where is the emergency call-out easiest to find?

One of the most-asked trades in an emergency is the humble plumber. Snodland leads Kent with 16.67 plumbers per 10,000 residents — handy news if you live nearby at 2am with a burst pipe.

  • Snodland — 20 plumbers · 16.67 per 10k
  • Faversham — 16 plumbers · 8.00 per 10k
  • Rochester — 20 plumbers · 6.90 per 10k
  • Whitstable — 20 plumbers · 6.25 per 10k
  • Sevenoaks — 17 plumbers · 5.67 per 10k

Coastal versus inland Kent

Kent's coast — from Whitstable through Margate, Ramsgate, Deal, Dover and Folkestone — has long been a different market to inland towns like Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury. Our data shows the two halves are closer than you might think, with a few telling gaps.

Coastal Kent

1,219
unique businesses across 9 coastal towns (1,803 listings)

Avg rating: 4.73
Google reviews: 31,613
% of listings rated: 93.0%

Inland Kent

1,662
unique businesses across 12 inland towns (2,496 listings)

Avg rating: 4.73
Google reviews: 45,808
% of listings rated: 94.3%

The gap in average rating between coastal and inland Kent is essentially nil — within a hundredth of a star. Inland Kent does have a deeper bench of unique businesses, partly because the inland sample includes the largest urban centres (Maidstone, Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells), but on a per-town basis the two halves are remarkably balanced. Coastal traders generate slightly fewer reviews per business — partly reflecting the seasonality of holiday-let and rental maintenance demand on the coast.

Kent's best-reviewed town: Faversham

Filtering to towns with 50+ rated traders, Faversham has the highest average Google rating in Kent at 4.83 / 5.0 across 167 rated businesses. It's a useful shorthand for customer-service benchmarks across the county.

Five patterns that jumped out of the data

  1. EV Charger Installers are Kent's biggest trade by listing count. 284 unique businesses — 11.0% of all Kent traders. (Note: the EV charger category as returned by Google mixes installers and public charging stations, which depresses its average rating; see methodology below.)
  2. Heating Engineers are Kent's scarcest trade. Only 35 unique businesses county-wide service all 21 towns. If you need one for a 2026 install, expect a waiting list.
  3. Kent homeowners are switching to green tech fast. EV charger installers and solar panel installers combined (377) now outnumber bathroom fitters (144) county-wide — a category-level reversal that wasn't true even five years ago.
  4. Small towns punch above their weight. Snodland has more traders per head than any bigger town, partly because it serves surrounding villages. This is typical of small market towns.
  5. Reviews are rewarded. Among Kent's top 10 highest-rated traders, the median review count is 460 — roughly 16× the county-wide average of 28 reviews per rated business. Building a public review base is a key marker of high-trust traders.

What this means for Kent homeowners

The data tells a clear story for anyone hiring a trade in 2026:

  • Shop around locally first. The median Kent town has 206 listed trades. Three written quotes is realistic everywhere in our dataset.
  • Prioritise rated businesses. 93.7% of Kent traders carry a public Google rating, and those that do average ★ 4.72. A listed business with no reviews isn't necessarily a red flag, but a well-rated one is an extra layer of confidence.
  • Plan ahead for specialist trades. Heat pump installers, heating engineers and other low-carbon specialists are still scarce. Book 4–8 weeks ahead in peak season.
  • Look beyond your postcode. If you're in a low-density town like Maidstone, nearby market towns like Snodland often have traders willing to travel. Our town pages show who services your postcode.
  • Get a written quote, every time. It's the single most common piece of advice from the traders themselves — and it's what separates a professional from a chancer.

Top-rated by trade — leaderboards

For each major trade we publish a dedicated county leaderboard of the highest-rated firms across all 36 Kent towns, ranked using the same Bayesian-adjusted formula described in the methodology. These are useful if you're choosing a trader rather than reading the market analysis:

Methodology

Dataset. We aggregated public Google Business Profile data for 2,585 unique trades businesses (4,299 town-level listings, since many traders service multiple towns) across 21 Kent towns: Ashford, Canterbury, Chatham, Dartford, Deal, Dover, Faversham, Folkestone, Gillingham, Gravesend, Herne Bay, Maidstone, Margate, Ramsgate, Rochester, Sevenoaks, Sittingbourne, Snodland, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Whitstable. Data was collected in March 2026 and audited for obvious duplicates, non-trades businesses and closed listings.

Listings vs unique businesses. A single trader who advertises across, say, eight Kent towns appears eight times in the raw Google data. For all county-wide rating, review and leaderboard analysis we deduplicate by Google place ID so the same business is counted once. For per-town tables we keep the listings count, since it reflects who actually services that postcode.

Trade categories. Fifteen trade categories were sampled per town: plumbers, electricians, roofers, gardeners, painters & decorators, carpenters, handymen, bathroom fitters, locksmiths, boiler repair engineers, plasterers, heat pump installers, heating engineers, EV charger installers and solar panel installers.

EV charger category caveat. Google's EV charger installer category in Kent returns a mix of installation specialists and public charging stations (Pod Point, ChargePoint and so on). The latter drag down the category's average rating since drivers often leave low ratings for malfunctioning chargers. Treat the EV charger rating headline number with that in mind.

Populations. Town populations are 2021 ONS census approximations for the urban area. They are deliberately crude — commuter-heavy towns like Sevenoaks or Tonbridge may have inflated daytime populations, while small market towns like Snodland over-index because the surrounding villages share its trades.

Ratings. Average ratings are calculated only across businesses that carry at least one public Google review. Listings with no rating are counted in total counts but excluded from rating averages.

Ranking formula (top 10 highest-rated). We use a Bayesian-adjusted rating to avoid rewarding one-off five-star listings: (rating × reviews + 4.0 × 10) / (reviews + 10), then scaled by min(reviews, 300) / 300 as a volume weight. A minimum of 25 reviews is required to qualify.

Limits. Google Business Profiles are self-reported and moderated; they're a good but imperfect proxy for the real market. Small independent traders with no public profile will be missing. We do not use review sentiment analysis or paid data sources.
