GU10 LED bulbs: beam, brightness and dimming checks

Choose a GU10 LED bulb by its exact cap and electrical specification, then compare output, beam angle, colour temperature and body size. The Philips UK examples here all use GU10 and specify 220–240 V, but their brightness and dimming status differ. A similar spotlight shape is insufficient evidence of compatibility: Philips also sells a separate GU5.3 family rated for a 12 V AC electronic supply. Check the fitting and control requirements before comparing retailer packs.

Compare these exact GU10 references

Each example lists a 36-degree beam angle. Keep beam angle alongside lumen output when replacing a directional lamp: a cap match alone does not describe where the light is directed. The dimensions refer to the bulb, not its packaging.

Keep GU10 and GU5.3 separate

Philips GU5.3 reference 8718699773977 specifies a 12 V AC electronic supply. It is a different cap and supply requirement from the GU10 references above. Do not use a spotlight's familiar front diameter, the MR16 description or a photograph as permission to exchange these lamps.

Read the existing fitting's instructions and exact lamp marking. This comparison identifies replacement-bulb requirements; it does not describe converting the fitting, altering wiring or replacing a transformer.

Match the light and its control

The 4000 K example and the 2700 K example have different colour specifications as well as different lumen output. Compare these fields explicitly when trying to match other spotlights. Actual powers for the three rows are 3.5, 4.6 and 6.2 W respectively; the larger watt numbers in their names describe equivalence.

Only the WarmGlow row is documented as dimmable. Philips says to check the dimmer compatibility chart for the particular control. Include the cap, lumens, colour, beam and required dimming status in an Amazon search, then verify the selected EAN and pack. These examples are not a universal downlight compatibility list.

MATCH THE DETAILS TO YOUR JOB

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm GU10 and the fitting's supply requirements; do not substitute a 12 V GU5.3 lamp.
  2. Compare lumens, colour temperature and beam angle separately.
  3. Check the bulb's height and width against the fitting's permitted dimensions.
  4. Match dimmable or non-dimmable status and verify the exact control where needed.
  5. Read the selected product code and pack quantity before ordering.
