Plug-in timer sockets

Decide whether you need the same schedule every day or different settings across the week. A mechanical segment timer and a digital programmable timer may look similar in a search result but offer different scheduling options. Compare the shortest switching interval with the task, and check what happens to the settings after a power interruption. The connected appliance also needs to be suitable for external switching; a timer’s socket shape alone does not establish that suitability.

What to check before buying

  1. Check the permitted load and the manufacturer’s supported appliance types for the exact timer model.
  2. Compare daily or weekly scheduling, minimum switching interval and the number of programmes available.
  3. Confirm the plug format, socket position and body dimensions so it will fit without obstructing nearby outlets.
  4. Read the indoor or outdoor rating, manual override behaviour and whether settings survive a power interruption.
